What is Starlink and how does it work?
Starlink is a satellite internet service developed by SpaceX that can bring broadband to rural areas with limited coverage. Find out how it works and whether it’s right for you.
If you live in a rural area or in an isolated home where broadband is slow to arrive (or simply isn’t available), you’ve probably heard of Starlink. Here’s a clear explanation of what it is, how it works, and whether it’s a realistic alternative to other connections like broadband or ADSL.
What is Starlink?
Starlink is a satellite internet service developed by SpaceX, the company founded by Elon Musk. Its goal is to provide internet access in areas where traditional infrastructure is limited or non-existent — mainly rural and remote locations.
Unlike older satellite systems, Starlink uses a network of thousands of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites. This significantly reduces latency and improves speed. It’s not just for basic browsing — you can stream films, play online games, and make video calls without constant interruptions.
How does Starlink work?
Starlink operates through a constellation of satellites orbiting at around 550 km above Earth. That’s much closer than traditional geostationary satellites (around 35,000 km), and that’s what makes the difference in performance.
To connect, you need a satellite dish that communicates directly with the satellites. The dish connects to a router, giving you WiFi at home — even in the middle of the countryside. Installation is straightforward, but it does require a clear view of the sky. It won’t work well if it’s blocked by trees, walls, or tall roofs.
If you want to compare this with a fixed network, you can read this guide on how broadband works.
How much does Starlink cost?
Prices can vary, but in Spain the setup kit costs around €450 (including the dish, router, and cables), and the monthly fee is typically €40–€50. There’s a higher upfront cost compared to traditional broadband, but the monthly fee is similar to a mid-range plan.
There’s also a version designed for motorhomes, boats, or users on the move — slightly more expensive, but useful if you work remotely and travel frequently.
How to check if Starlink is available
It’s simple: visit the official Starlink website, enter your address, and you’ll see whether it’s available or if there’s a waiting list.
That said, it’s worth checking other options first. Many areas that previously lacked broadband now have coverage. You can use this guide to find out.
How to get Starlink in Spain
There’s no need for a middleman. You order directly from their website, receive the kit at home, and install it yourself. Make sure you choose a good location for the dish — no obstructions and a clear view of the sky.
Once installed, you configure the router via the Starlink app and you’re ready to go. It’s a fairly plug-and-play system.
Starlink alternatives
Starlink is designed for areas with limited coverage, but it’s not always the only (or best) option. Where broadband is available, it remains more stable and offers lower latency. It’s also cheaper to install and doesn’t depend on weather conditions or visibility.
There are also intermediate solutions like 4G home internet or WiMAX networks, which can perform well in certain locations. And if the issue is simply WiFi coverage inside your home, a repeater or amplifier might be enough.
Very Satisfied
The service is excellent, and we always pay the same amount. We’ve been customers for three years. The staff at the store are very professional and serve us in three different languages!
